Before applying for the Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) exam, check which eligibility option fits your background. Current RCDD Certification Handbook lists three options. Depending on the option, you need ICT design experience and either a qualifying Telecommunication certification, relevant education, or additional ICT experience.

A college degree is not required for every pathway. However, applicants must meet one complete option and provide documentation for Telecommunication’s review. This guide explains the Telecommunication RCDD certification requirements, what experience and education may count, and how to prepare an application.

For a broader overview of the credential, read our RCDD certification guide.

You may qualify with two years of ICT design experience plus a current qualifying Telecommunication certification; two years of ICT design experience plus two years of ICT higher education coursework; or five years of verifiable ICT experience. You must meet the requirements for one option when you apply.

RCDD eligibility requirements at a glance

The RCDD is a Telecommunication certification for professionals who work in telecommunications distribution design and related ICT infrastructure. The RCDD eligibility requirements are based on experience, education, or a current Telecommunication certification, depending on the pathway you choose.

Option Experience Additional requirement
1 Two years of verifiable full-time ICT design experience Hold a current BICSI TECH, RTPM, DCDC, or OSP certification
2 Two years of verifiable full-time-equivalent ICT design experience Complete two years of higher education coursework in ICT
3 Five years of verifiable ICT experience No separate degree or credential is listed for this option

You do not need to meet all three options. Choose the one that reflects your qualifications and gather evidence for that pathway. Telecommunication reviews applications and may ask for further proof of experience.

RCDD experience requirements: what work may count?

The experience requirement depends on your selected option. Options 1 and 2 require two years of ICT design experience. Option 3 requires five years of verifiable ICT experience, which is broader than design work.

Telecommunication describes ICT experience as work involving the design, management, integration, or installation of infrastructure such as pathways, spaces, copper and optical-fiber distribution systems, and wireless systems. Examples in the handbook include:

  • Planning telecommunications spaces and pathways.
  • Working with ICT designs, drawings, specifications, or project documents.
  • Designing structured cabling systems, racks, grounding, and bonding.
  • Conducting site surveys and documenting user or operational requirements.
  • Coordinating with architects, engineers, vendors, trades, and project teams.
  • Applying relevant standards, codes, and authority requirements.
  • Reviewing test results, calculating cable distances or pathway capacity, and supporting quality control.
  • Supporting or assessing installation work against the design.

The handbook also recognizes broader ICT duties, including hands-on technician work, ICT installation, project management, and work involving intelligent building systems. These examples can help you describe your experience, but your job title alone does not establish eligibility. Explain what you did, when you did it, and how it related to ICT. Telecommunication makes the eligibility decision after reviewing your application.

What ICT experience qualifies for the RCDD exam?

Experience may be relevant if it involves telecommunications infrastructure, structured cabling, pathways and spaces, ICT drawings, standards, testing, installation, or design coordination. For a two-year option, your experience must be ICT design experience. For the five-year option, the handbook specifies verifiable ICT experience.

If your work combines design, installation, project coordination, and technical support, describe those duties separately in your résumé or supporting records. Be specific about systems, project tasks, and your role. Do not assume that all general IT, networking, or construction work will count as ICT experience.

RCDD education requirements: do you need a degree?

A bachelor’s degree is not a universal RCDD certification prerequisite. Option 1 relies on design experience and a current Telecommunication certification. Option 3 relies on five years of ICT experience. Option 2 is the pathway that specifically requires education: two years of ICT design experience plus two years of higher education coursework in ICT.

Telecommunication’s handbook says relevant coursework may include STEM or trade school, a two-year degree, ICT or industry-related programs, apprenticeships, certifications, or equivalent military training. Examples of related study areas include telecommunications, electrical studies, engineering technology, computer science, information systems, network systems, automation, and security systems.

What education counts toward RCDD eligibility?

For Option 2, education should be related to ICT and supported by evidence. Telecommunication lists certificates, diplomas, registrar documentation, and other bona fide documents as examples of evidence. The handbook also explains that education is evaluated for relevance, so a course or credential does not automatically qualify simply because it was completed.

If your education came from an apprenticeship, military program, trade school, or industry course, collect clear records showing what you completed and when. Telecommunication may need enough detail to assess whether the coursework relates to ICT.

Which Telecommunication credentials meet Option 1?

For Option 1, applicants need two years of verifiable full-time ICT design experience and a current certification from this list:

  • Telecommunication Technician (TECH)
  • Registered Telecommunications Project Manager (RTPM)
  • Data Center Design Consultant (DCDC)
  • Telecommunication Outside Plant Designer (OSP)

The handbook names these credentials for this pathway. If you hold a different professional credential, it may still be valuable to your career, but do not assume it substitutes for one of the listed certifications. You may qualify through another option if you meet its requirements.

RCDD application requirements and documents

Meeting an eligibility option is only one part of the process. Telecommunication also requires an application and supporting documentation. The current handbook lists these application requirements:

  • A completed online RCDD Exam Application.
  • A current résumé or CV.
  • If applicable, copies of degrees, diplomas, certifications, certificates, licenses, or other relevant documents.
  • Additional proof of ICT experience if Telecommunication requests it.

Applicants using the education pathway should be ready to provide records that support the coursework or training being claimed. Keep dates and descriptions consistent across your application, résumé, and documents. Telecommunication states that it verifies ICT experience and may request more evidence; failure to provide requested documentation can result in rejection.

How to apply for the RCDD certification exam

Use this sequence to prepare your eligibility application:

  1. Select one pathway. Confirm that your experience, education, or current credential satisfies every requirement for that option.
  2. Read the current certification handbook. Check the criteria and application instructions before gathering documents.
  3. Prepare your résumé and evidence. Include relevant work history and supporting education or credential records, where applicable.
  4. Submit through Telecommunication Navigator. The handbook directs candidates to submit the online application and required materials through the Credentials Home dashboard.
  5. Wait for review. Telecommunication may verify your experience or ask for additional documentation.
  6. Schedule the exam after approval. Follow the instructions and eligibility dates provided by Telecommunication.

The handbook says application approval can take up to 30 days and that candidates have one year from approval to take the exam. Confirm current processing details, fees, and scheduling instructions before applying, as these can change.

Frequently asked questions about RCDD certification eligibility

What are the requirements for RCDD certification?

You must meet one of Telecommunication’s three eligibility options: two years of ICT design experience plus a listed current BICSI certification; two years of ICT design experience plus two years of ICT coursework; or five years of verifiable ICT experience.

How do you qualify for the RCDD certification exam?

Choose an eligibility option, document the required experience and other qualifications for that option, and submit the application materials to Telecommunication for review. You need application approval before scheduling the exam.

How much experience is required for RCDD certification?

The requirement is two years of ICT design experience for Options 1 and 2, or five years of ICT experience for Option 3. The two-year pathways also require a current qualifying Telecommunication credential or ICT coursework.

Can I take the RCDD exam without a degree?

Yes. A degree is not required for every option. You may qualify through the current Telecommunication certification pathway or the five-year ICT experience pathway, provided you meet the remaining requirements.

What documents are needed for an RCDD application?

Telecommunication lists an online application, a current résumé or CV, and applicable education, certification, license, or other relevant records. It may request additional experience documentation.
